What is a Car Air Filter?
The main function of your vehicle’s air filter is to filter and clean the air as it is taken into the engine to be burned along with the fuel, thereby producing combustion. The air used during combustion should be as clean as possible in order to prevent engine contamination or damage. Dirty or contaminated air reduces the engine performance and reduces fuel efficiency, which may ultimately compromise the engine.
Problems With the Air Filter
Problems with air filters occur when they are dirty or clogged. Symptoms may be different depending on the vehicle and engine type and size.
Black Exhaust Smoke
If the mix of fuel and air is too rich, i.e. there is not enough air, too much fuel will be burnt which will lead to dark or black smoke from the exhaust pipe.
Rough Engine Noise
The rich fuel mix may also lead to a black sooty residue on the heads of spark plugs. This can lead to the spark plugs not firing properly thereby causing the engine to miss or or to running roughly.
Reduced Fuel Efficiency
With a lower air intake the vehicle will burn more fuel than is usual or is necessary. Significantly lower mileage rates are a direct consequence of this.
A dirty or clogged air filter may cause some unused fuel to exit the engine into the exhaust. This unused fuel can ignite causing a gunshot-type sound and even a flame at the end of the exhaust pipe.
Smell of Fuel in Exhaust
If there is a smell of fuel from the exhaust when starting the car or van this may be caused by the reduction of air finding it’s way into the carburettor or the fuel injection system. The excess fuel may blown out via the exhaust.
